This version of the image has been processed to make the view better resemble what you see with the unaided eye, in a largely monochrome and softer view than the colourful and high-contrast views commonly presented in astrophotos. Even at that there is more fine structure present in the Milky Way than the unaided eye usually sees, though binoculars beging to reveal that smaller detail. I have left some colours in some stars and in the foreground of landscape scenes.
Fish-eye all-sky of the northern winter sky, taken about 8 pm, January 16, 2010, from home. Taken with Canon 5D MkII camera at ISO 800, with Sigma 8mm fish-eye lens at f/4 for stack of 3 x 4 minute exposures, combined with Median Combine to retain foreground detail and eliminate satellites and aircraft. Zodiacal Light is at right, in evening sky. Yellow glow above it behind house is urban glow from Strathmore and Calgary. Autumn and winter Milky Way arcs across frame. Mars is just rising at 9:30 position at left. Jupiter going down in the trees at 4:00 position at right. Sirius just coming up at 8:00 position at lower left.
