Comet Lovejoy, C/2014 Q2, in Taurus near the Pleiades star cluster, on Jan 16, 2015. Orion is below, rising above the formations of City of Rocks State Park, New Mexico. Sirius is just clearing the rocks at bottom. The comet’s long ion tail stretches back about 15° into Taurus. This is a stack of 5 x 2 minute exposures, tracked on the Star Adventurer tracker, with the 24mm lens at f/2.5 and filter-modified Canon 5D MkII at ISO 1600.
Comet Lovejoy, C/2014 Q2, a wide binocular field west of M45, the Pleiades star cluster in Taurus, on January 15, 2015. I shot this from the backyard at Silver City, New Mexico. The long blue ion tail stretched back for about 8°. This is a stack of 10 x 2 minute exposures with the 135mm telephoto lens at f/2.5 and Canon 5D MkII at ISO 1600. Tracked on the Sky-Watcher Sky Guider but without guiding.
This is Comet Lovejoy (C/2014 Q2) as shot on January 11, 2015, from near Silver City, New Mexico, using a 135mm telephoto lens for a field of 15 by 10 degrees. The comet was in Taurus. The image records the faint blue ion tail stretching back for nearly half the field, about 5 to 6 degrees. This is a stack of 24 x 1 minute exposures at f/2 and with the Canon 5D Mk!II at ISO 1600. Tracked but not guided with the Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer.
