The Milky Way set in the deep blue of evening twilight, over Herbert Lake and Mount Temple and peaks around Lake Louise, in Banff National Park, Alberta. Taken August 29, 2016. This is a stack of 10 images for the ground, mean averaged to smooth noise, and one image for the ground and lake reflections to minimize star trailing. All are 25 seconds at f/2 with the Sigma 20mm Art lens and Nikon D750 at ISO 3200.
The August 24, 2016 conjunction of Mars (in the middle) and Saturn (above Mars), with both planets above the star Antares in Scorpius, all low in the southwest over the Bow River, at Blackfoot Crossing, Alberta. The site is overlooking the Bow River valley and the traditional meeting place on the Bow for the Blackfoot Nation, and where Treaty Seven was signed in 1877. Today, just behind where I stood for this image is the impressive Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park and museum run by the Siksika Nation. The Milky Way is to the left and the last glow of sunset twilight to the right. Clouds added the natural glows around the planets and stars. Unfortunately, light pollution discolours the horizon. This is a panorama of two images, with the Nikon D750 and 24mm Sigma lens, for 20 seconds at f/2 and ISO 1600, taken prior to starting a time-lapse sequence. Stitched with Adobe Camera Raw.
A dim aurora to the north at Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan, at the Larson Ranch site and its rustic pioneer cabins. Taken August 8, 2016. This is looking northeast to Andromeda (the Andromeda Galaxy is above centre) and Perseus (the Double Cluster is left of centre). This Park is a Dark Sky Preserve. There are no lights visible. Illumination here is from starlight and the setting waxing crescent Moon to the southwest. This is a single exposure, 30 seconds untracked, with the Sigma 20mm lens at f/2 and Nikon D750 at ISO 3200, taken at the start of a time-lapse sequence. I cloned out the No Trespassing signs on the buildings.
