Open cluster pair of M47 (right), a bright loose cluster, and M46 (left), a fainter but very rich open cluster. Loose cluster at top right is NGC 2423. Planetary nebula NGC 2438 is at north edge of M46. Taken from Timor Cottage, Coonabarabran, NSW, Australia, December 12, 2010. This is a stack of 5 x 6 minute exposures at ISO 1600 with Canon 5D MkII camera on 105mm Astro-Physics Traveler apo refractor at f/5.8 with 6x7 field flattener.
The contrasting open star clusters in Puppis: M46, the rich condensed cluster at left, and M47 the loose and sparse but bright open cluster at right. The field contains a nice mix of blue and yellow stars. This is with the Borg 77mm astrographic apo refractor (330mm focal length) at f/4.3 for a stack of 5 x 8 minute exposures with the filter-modified Canon 5D Mark II at ISO 800.
