I am an author of astronomy books and magazine articles, and a photographer of the night sky. I also present astrophoto workshops and inspiring talks on astronomy and the wonders of the universe.
I am associate editor of SkyNews, Canada's magazine of stargazing, and a contributing editor to Sky & Telescope magazine. My photos and videos have appeared on Spaceweather.com, Astronomy Picture of the Day, Universe Today, National Geographic, TIME, NBCNews, and CBSNews. I am a member of the The World at Night photo group. I am now retired from many exciting years producing planetarium shows for the theatres in Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Calgary, Canada. The main belt asteroid #78434 is named for me, a very nice honour.
I have written or co-authored several traditional print books on astronomy, notably the much-acclaimed The Backyard Astronomer's Guide, with Terence Dickinson, in print since 1992. I now author multimedia ebooks, such as How to Photograph & Process Nightscapes and Time-Lapses, greatly revised and expanded in December 2016.
I specialize in photography of the night sky, both still images and time-lapse movies. However, within the field of astrophotography I have eclectic interests, photographing everything from moonlit nightscapes with time-lapse gear, to long exposures of the Milky Way and deep-sky wonders through telescopes. I have travelled the world – from the Arctic to the Antarctic, from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans – to photograph and experience total eclipses of the Sun from six continents and two oceans.
I frequently conduct guided stargazing sessions under the night sky, for public and special interest groups, often in parks and at special events. I also present richly-illustrated talks suitable for all interest and age levels, touring the audience through the wonders of the night sky and the latest astronomical discoveries.
I conduct astrophoto workshops, in formats from hour-long talks to day-long seminars. These cover techniques for shooting nightscapes, time-lapse movies, and images of deep-sky wonders, plus the use of Adobe Photoshop and other specialized software for processing astrophotos and time-lapse sequences.
I participated in a successful Kickstartercampaign to raise funds to complete a video tutorial series I wrote and hosted, and that is now being sold by All-Star Telescope. Click the link to order the videos, either as downloads or as shipped USB sticks, at theAll-Star Telescope website.
